Collision Involving USS Midway
A 60-foot private boat crashed into the USS Midway in San Diego on Friday afternoon. According to a Harbor Police spokesperson, the boat’s captain was arrested for allegedly being under the influence and attacking the vessel.
The incident happened just before 2 PM on July 18, as confirmed by officials. The collision damaged the hull of the USS Midway, leaving noticeable dents on the side of the historic, decommissioned aircraft carrier.
This event drew the attention of onlookers near the famous “unconditional surrender” statue, which is inspired by the iconic World War II photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse at the war’s end. This statue is positioned close to the USS Midway.
“We received multiple calls from witnesses,” the official stated, noting that bystanders reported “the impact was very loud.”
The fishing boat initially fled the scene but was intercepted by Harbor police near the San Diego Coronado Bridge. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The suspect’s boat sustained minor damage and was not in danger of sinking. However, police estimated the damage to the USS Midway at over $100,000. The identity of the suspect has not yet been revealed, and the investigation is ongoing.
Following the crash, the captain was arrested for operating under the influence and for the hit-and-run incident.
Videos captured by Warshipcam of the collision circulated widely on social media, showcasing the moment the private vessel approached the historic aircraft carrier.
“You can’t park here,” one viewer humorously commented on the footage.
Another joked, “Your honor, I was pulled in front of me along the way.”
