A surf instructor from California, Elieah Boyd, 24, suffered a severe accident when he collided with an Amtrak train.
Boyd described the moment as surreal, saying, “It was unbelievable to look down and see my arm missing.”
He recalled, “I had just a few seconds to react before the train was upon me,” during an interview.
This accident occurred around 5:30 PM on July 7 while Boyd was pushing an 80-pound electric bike across the Ventura train tracks.
Fortunately, a retired firefighter was nearby and called for emergency assistance right away. Boyd’s severed arm was found a few feet from where he was hit.
He was swiftly airlifted to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he underwent an extensive 10-hour surgery to address his injuries.
Although he still faces two more surgeries in the near future, Boyd has reported gaining some sensation in his arm.
Despite everything, he expressed eagerness to return to surfing. “As soon as I’m back in the water, I’ll be on my board. I can’t stop thinking about it here in the hospital,” he shared.
A GoFundMe campaign created for his medical expenses has exceeded its initial goal of $50,000, now raising over $65,000.
The campaign highlights Boyd’s determination and spirited attitude, affirming that his journey to recovery, while challenging, showcases his remarkable resilience.
