AI Policy Council Launched Amid Deregulation Efforts
On Wednesday, the former chief lawyer for the Department of Efficiency unveiled a new AI Policy Council, aligning with President Trump’s latest attempts to deregulate the sector.
James Burnham, who held key roles at the Department of Justice during Trump’s first term, is the founder of this initiative. The AI Innovation Council embraces an “America-first” stance on AI, aiming to hinder China’s bid for global technological supremacy, both economically and militarily.
“Artificial intelligence is a groundbreaking technology that has the potential to make the United States wealthier and larger than ever before,” Burnham stated.
He emphasized that “President Trump is dedicated to ensuring that U.S. policy bolsters and maintains America’s leadership in AI to foster human prosperity, economic competition, and national security.”
Burnham also acknowledged concerns about large tech companies, saying, “While I recognize the validity of worries regarding monopolistic practices, we shouldn’t let past abuses deter new innovators from entering what could be a new golden age.”
The newly-formed council aims to outline a regulatory framework for AI and stimulate US-based businesses.
The “AI Action Plan,” supported by Silicon Valley billionaire David Sacks, also focuses on promoting the “export” of American AI technology and developing U.S. data centers.
Later on Wednesday, Trump is expected to sign multiple executive orders related to AI.
Just last week, Sacks announced over $100 billion in private investment related to energy alongside Trump at a forum in Pittsburgh.
Reports suggest that the administration might work to prevent states from overregulating the industry, as indicated in a summary obtained by Reuters.
A proposed ban on state and local AI regulations was dropped from an extensive bill pushed by Republicans before Trump’s July 4th signing.
Burnham concluded, “The objective isn’t solely to win the race for innovation. It’s about propelling America into a new golden age.”
