The Trump administration has reported the transfer of 6,000 immigrant detainees to New York City, with the Department of Homeland Security requesting that local officials hand over illegal immigrant criminals to the federal government.
This marks a significant increase—about 400%—compared to the Biden administration’s approach, as DHS ramps up immigration enforcement efforts in sanctuary cities.
According to DHS, only a small fraction of the 6,000 detainees represents “respected” individuals, arguing that many violent criminals have been released back into the community. They highlighted this concern in a post on X.
“All New Yorkers should be aware that their sanctuary politicians are standing against law enforcement, allowing foreigners with serious criminal histories—like rape and murder—to remain in their neighborhoods,” DHS stated.
The agency emphasized its commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring the safety of U.S. communities.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem criticized Mayor Eric Adams for the city’s sanctuary policies, particularly after an incident involving off-duty customs and border patrol agents being shot by illegal immigrants with lengthy criminal records.
Although Adams expressed a desire to revise New York’s Sanctuary Act, he faces limitations imposed by the city council.
In a notable case, Dominican immigrant Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, 21, was previously under deportation orders before allegedly attacking an officer and his companions in Fort Washington Park.
Noem addressed reporters, emphasizing that individuals like Nunez should not be free on the streets of New York City. She described her visit to the hospital where the injured agent is fighting for his life as heartbreaking and linked the officer’s plight to the mayor’s policies.
