McAllen, Texas – A coach is facing consequences following an incident during a softball game in the Texas Youth Softball League. The event unfolded on a Saturday night, attracting parents who were there to support the players.
During a play, a controversial call by the referee led to tensions rising. The referee, a woman, signaled obstruction, which upset coach Joel Gonzalez. Reportedly, he approached her to express his dissatisfaction with the decision.
As the referee attempted to explain her ruling, Gonzalez reacted angrily and reportedly used foul language. This prompted her to eject him from the game. Footage from the incident captured the moments leading up to the altercation, showing both individuals moving away from each other before coming together again near home plate.
In a surprising twist, Gonzalez was seen bumping into the referee. Another umpire present, who happened to be the woman’s father, rushed in to intervene and separate them. When Gonzalez continued his aggressive behavior, the female referee decided to call off the game and retreated to the other side of the field.
In the video, it appears that as the referee turned away, Gonzalez collided with her, causing her to fall to the ground. He was identifiable by the red, white, and blue shirt he wore, which mirrored the one in his subsequent mug shot.
Following the game, McAllen police arrested Gonzalez, charging him with assault resulting in physical injuries. The referee reported that during the incident, she had her helmet knocked off and her fingers were pinched by metal wires as she fell.
The Pony Softball League was contacted for a statement regarding the altercation. Representatives announced that appropriate measures were taken, ensuring Gonzalez would no longer coach in their league. They also mentioned that additional security would be present at the ballpark to promote safety for parents and players.
Dalinda Gonzalez-Alcantar, CEO of the McAllen Boys & Girls Club, expressed concern for community safety in her statement. She emphasized that any incidents affecting safety will be taken very seriously and reiterated that BGCM will not tolerate harmful behavior in their facilities.
Efforts to reach Gonzalez and his team, the RGV Huskies, for comments are ongoing.
