During a recent podcast, comedian Michael Rappaport, who’s based in New York City, coined a new nickname for democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani, calling him “Zoran the Fool.” He humorously insisted that he wouldn’t abandon the city even if Mamdani becomes mayor. Rappaport remarked, “I’ve heard many say that if Zoran wins, they’ll leave New York. New Yorkers shouldn’t go anywhere if he takes office,” urging them not to let go of their city.
Mamdani’s candidacy has raised alarms among Jewish New Yorkers due to his rhetoric regarding Israel. In an interview, he did not denounce the phrase “globalizes the intifada,” which sparked backlash. Following the criticism, he reportedly assured city business leaders that he would avoid using that slogan and discourage its use among others.
Business stakeholders are quite apprehensive about Mamdani’s socialist policies, including his idea for a rent freeze. As a Jew who has vocally supported Israel, Rappaport has articulated his concern, labeling Mamdani a “terrorist supporter” and urging fellow residents to oppose him.
Rappaport expressed his determination to stay in New York regardless of any economic consequences that might arise from Mamdani’s policies. He emphasized, “I will never leave New York… If this guy wins, we need to own it and work to make New York great again.”
Reflecting on the political landscape, Rappaport lamented the impact of candidates like Mamdani, asserting that it’s a “slap in the face” regardless of the election’s outcome. Mamdani did not respond to requests for a statement.
