New Yorkers remain uncertain about accepting a socialist mayor, despite Zohran Mamdani's lead in the race: poll

Concerns About Zoran Mamdani’s Mayoral Bid

Many New Yorkers seem apprehensive about the idea of socialist Zoran Mamdani taking over city hall. A recent poll indicates that the mayoral race is heating up, particularly if Mamdani manages to stand out in a crowded field.

The poll shows Mamdani holding his ground in a four-way race alongside Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, with Republican Curtis Sliwa also in the mix.

If it comes down to a face-off between Mamdani and Cuomo, things appear quite close. Interestingly, some Queens councilors seem to favor Mamdani over the others.

Political analyst Ken Friedman noted that both Adams and Cuomo are struggling with their popularity. “It’s not surprising they remain quite unpopular,” he said. “By Election Day, their standing is unlikely to improve, and they may even dip further.”

Friedman pointed out that voters generally gravitate toward candidates with an appealing demeanor. “Those with noticeable charisma, like Mamdani, often have the edge,” he added, contrasting them with the less engaging personalities of Adams and Cuomo.

In this poll, which surveyed 500 voters and omitted independent candidate Jim Walden, it seems New Yorkers are still hesitant about backing someone without prior experience in office.

The poll revealed that only 46% of the voters are open to the idea of a socialist mayor, with 44% opposed to such a leadership style. Additionally, about 10% expressed uncertainty regarding their stance on socialism in city leadership.

Interestingly, a majority—53%—believe that Mamdani’s idealistic views on socialism might not translate well into real-world results. Yet, nearly half of the respondents view him as the candidate most attuned to the cost of living and worker rights.

Mamdani is notable for having favorable ratings not running below water, with 43% viewing him positively, the same as those who hold a negative view.

As a fresh contender, Mamdani has taken a strong position with 39% support in the current four-way race, closely followed by Cuomo at 21%, Sliwa at 18%, and Adams trailing at 9%.

In a direct matchup, Mamdani may fare well against Sliwa and even Adams, but against Cuomo, it could be a different story; Cuomo leads slightly at 42% to Mamdani’s 41%.

Political insiders are cautious, however, about putting too much weight on a single poll. Most surveys, barring one, suggested Mamdani was trailing in terms of rank-choice voting, though they also indicated he’s gradually closing the gap.

In a key primary scenario, Mamdani could prevail against Cuomo, edging him out 56% to 44%, marking a significant win for a Democrat in over three decades. Despite this, Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azopardi, commented on the poll’s implications, insisting that Cuomo directly addresses voter concerns about making New York City more affordable and safer, contrasting it against what he referred to as Mamdani’s lack of substance and the challenges with Adams’ administration.
