China acquires prohibited NVIDIA AI chips through the black market, according to a report

Concerns Over AI Chip Access in China

Just a day after the Trump administration unveiled a major initiative aimed at solidifying U.S. leadership in the AI sector, reports have emerged suggesting that China is managing to acquire advanced AI chips through illicit means. This development raises alarms about America’s edge in an intensely competitive field.

According to the Financial Times, China has been engaging in transactions involving cutting-edge AI chips via black market channels. This move appears to be an effort to circumvent Trump-era export controls and tariffs designed to restrict access to crucial technologies.

A staggering amount—over $1 billion worth—of NVIDIA B200 chips has reportedly been traded on the black market in China. A lawyer well-versed in trade regulations told the Financial Times that while selling and receiving these restricted chips within China is lawful, sending or selling them to China would breach U.S. laws, assuming the necessary tariffs are paid.

Interestingly, NVIDIA has indicated that they are not aware of these illegal transactions happening through third parties.

“The idea of consolidating all data centers for smuggling products is not economically or technically viable,” stated an NVIDIA representative in a conversation with Blaze News. “Data centers need proper service and support, which is only available for certified NVIDIA products.”

While the Trump administration has relaxed restrictions on older chips, the B200 and its successor, the B300, are critical for maintaining U.S. dominance in the tech arena. Those particular chips are currently being promoted in China but haven’t yet reached the market.

At a White House event, AI Czar David Sacks emphasized the ongoing U.S. efforts to “win the AI race,” as outlined in the American AI Action Plan released recently. The plan seeks to enhance collaboration with global allies while prioritizing the protection and competitiveness of the U.S. AI industry.
