The British left seems poised for more divisions as Jeremy Corbyn, the former Labour leader with far-left views, has officially revealed plans for a new leftist party alongside Zara Sultana, a radical figure.
The establishment of this new and still unnamed party was shared on Thursday by independent lawmakers Corbyn and Sultana. They claim that the only way to address modern Britain’s pressing issues is through a campaign focusing on “massive redistribution of wealth and power.”
“Our movement encompasses individuals from all backgrounds,” declared the Corbynista Party, pushing back against the rising tide of populist right ideologies and anti-immigrant sentiment.
“The great dividers want you to believe that immigrants are responsible for our society’s challenges. That’s simply not true. The problems stem from economic systems that safeguard the interests of businesses and billionaires. It’s everyday people who create wealth, and it’s those same people who must reclaim it.”
To pursue this goal, the party suggested taxing the wealthiest and transitioning essential utilities like energy, water, railroads, and mail into public ownership.
They also proposed initiating a “large council architecture program” to construct government-owned housing and to confront “fossil fuel giants profiting off the destruction of our planet.”
Furthermore, this new party seems to be targeting Muslim voters, a notable aim for Corbyn since his removal from the Labour Party. Following his exit, he has been seen rallying alongside pro-Gaza candidates during the previous election.
Corbyn has often faced criticism regarding his associations with groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. Additionally, Sultana’s Pakistani Muslim background has influenced the British government’s stance on issues regarding Israel amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza, making it a point of contention for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.
“Millions are afraid of those implicated in crimes against humanity. Now, more than ever, we must stand up for our right to protest against genocide. We hold the radical belief that all human lives matter equally. Hence, we will insist on halting all arms sales to Israel,” the party emphasized.
The launch of the Left Party has already been undermined by communication issues. Initially named “your party,” referencing collective ownership favored by socialists, Sultana later clarified that this was not the official name after the media coverage began to circulate. She indicated that the official name would be determined in the future by the party members themselves.
This followed reports that Corbyn was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight with the early announcement of the party’s formation, claiming he would co-lead. As of now, it remains unconfirmed if Sultana will share leadership, but she has collaborated with Corbyn on the party’s initial statement.
Regardless of their official title, a recent poll suggests that parties led by Corbyn, particularly among younger voters, could garner at least 10% support soon. This could potentially weaken Labour while providing an advantage to Nigel Farage’s populist reform party.
