DHS Claims NYC Sanctuary Policies Impact Law Enforcement

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that most of the 6,000 detainees referred by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to New York City’s sanctuary cities are being ignored. These detainees are supposed to allow federal agents to detain illegal immigrants, minimizing risks associated with locating offenders in public areas.

DHS commented, “New Yorkers need to be informed. Local politicians in sanctuary cities are thwarting law enforcement efforts, letting illegal immigrants with serious criminal histories—including rape, murder, and drug trafficking—return to the streets post-release. Since the Biden administration, NYC has seen a more than 400% increase in such detainees.”

Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller also remarked, “New York City has released thousands of illegal immigrants who have committed crimes, allowing them to potentially reoffend.”

A significant point raised by DHS involves two suspects charged with killing a customs border officer during a robbery attempt. Both suspects were illegal immigrants released under the Biden-Harris administration.

One of those suspects, 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, reportedly had four prior arrests in New York City but was consistently freed without bail. In the incident, border patrol officers returned fire after being attacked.

On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Justice Department is suing New York City and Mayor Eric Adams, alleging that the sanctuary city policy is interfering with law enforcement operations.
