Nico Iamaleava's strategy for establishing a winning mentality at UCLA

UCLA Bruins and Iamaleava’s Impact

The UCLA Bruins, who play at the Rose Bowl—one of college football’s most esteemed venues—have struggled on the field for a while now. They’ve managed just one bowl win since 2015.

Iamaleava, the standout quarterback, contributed to Tennessee’s impressive 10-3 record and their appearance in the college football playoffs. Measuring 6-foot-6, this dual-threat player threw for 2,616 yards, racking up 19 touchdowns against five interceptions last season. He also rushed for three touchdowns and gained 358 yards. If he can replicate this performance at UCLA, it could mean a significant improvement for the Bruins this season.

UCLA was an appealing choice for Iamaleava, especially since it’s only about 30 miles from his hometown of Long Beach, California. After a disappointing 5-7 season, fans are hopeful that he can help the Bruins turn things around quickly. Head coach Deshaun Foster emphasized the importance of having a quarterback with a winning track record, particularly in the Big Ten Media era. He believes Iamaleava and the Bruins are ready to aim high this year.

“You can see the strength of his arm just by watching him play—he’s incredibly talented. That wasn’t always evident last season,” Foster remarked. “I’ve seen him in action a few times, and there’s a lot of familiarity with the players on our team. I’m really excited to have a quarterback with playoff experience.”

Iamaleava also brings a winning mentality, which UCLA desperately needs. Despite the Bruins not having claimed a national championship since 1954, his arrival inspires hope and ambition for a program that has struggled for years.

“My main goal is to restore the championship culture at Westwood,” Iamaleava expressed recently. “I really dislike losing. I’m a competitive person, and winning is what drives me. We want to bring a championship back to Westwood this year.”

However, it’s perhaps unrealistic to expect UCLA to reclaim a championship soon—not even the Big Ten Championship. For instance, they have the fourth-best odds to win the Big Ten, sitting at +18,000.

There have been various rumors surrounding Iamaleava’s departure from Tennessee, but he has clarified that his move to UCLA was largely influenced by family considerations.

“Leaving was a tough choice,” Iamaleava stated. “It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. My family was my top priority. Financial issues weren’t the main factor, as I wanted to play at a high level with my family’s support.”

This offseason, Iamaleava has quickly emerged as a key leader for the Bruins, thanks to the strong relationships he’s built with his new teammates and his prior experience at Tennessee. He even recalls breaking his helmet twice during Tennessee’s playoff loss. His toughness has already made an impression on the team.

“To me, toughness means never giving up,” Iamaleava said. “I always aim to win. Losing isn’t an option for me.”

While he acknowledges the challenges ahead for UCLA, Iamaleava is ready to dive into the effort and silence the skeptics.

“It’s a big challenge, and everyone in the locker room feels that pressure. Our coaches have set high expectations for us, so we need to prove ourselves right. We’re committed to becoming a successful team and having a great year,” he added.
