Carville: Trump might encounter a 'political disaster' with his MAGA supporters due to the Epstein controversy

Democratic strategist James Kerrville has expressed concern over the implications of the Department of Justice’s latest focus on President Trump’s MAGA supporters, especially related to the infamous investor Jeffrey Epstein. He remarked that losing “even 10%” of that base could be a severe political setback.

In a Thursday appearance on CNN’s “Status Room,” Kerrville discussed potential consequences for the president stemming from the Epstein controversy.

“If you think about it, he can’t afford to lose his base. He’s got about 88% to 90% of Republicans, even if they don’t exactly idolize him,” he said. “He’s really walking a tightrope here.”

This analysis comes as the Trump administration has called for the release of additional information related to the Epstein case. Earlier this month, a memo from the DOJ and the FBI stated that convicted sex offenders would not maintain a “client list.”

Bipartisan distrust in the federal government has been growing, with many voters expressing concerns about transparency in the DOJ. A survey from Emerson College Polling revealed that 51% of voters disapprove of the administration’s handling of related matters.

A recent Fox News poll indicated that only 13% of Republican respondents feel the administration is transparent, while 60% disagreed.

Despite the mounting drama, Trump has attempted to downplay the situation, even criticizing some of his own supporters. “Some stupid Republicans have fallen into the net, so they’re doing the Democrats’ work,” he told reporters in the Oval Office last week.

He described the controversy as an “Epstein hoax,” claiming it diverts attention from his administration’s achievements, while suggesting that focusing on Epstein’s issues is a waste of time.

Under pressure from his supporters, Trump asked Attorney General Pam Bondy to seek the testimony from Epstein’s grand jury and to obtain information about his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell is set to meet with Bondy’s Deputy, Todd Blanche, for questioning.

However, the judge declined Trump’s request.

Furthermore, Trump is in a legal dispute after he claimed to Bondi two months ago that he had been mentioned in Epstein’s documents, following a Wall Street Journal report. He has since denied these claims and is suing the publication.

Kerrville suggested on Thursday that, while the allegations don’t directly implicate Trump, “there is evidence he knew about it.”

“He mentioned that Epstein liked younger girls, so he clearly had some awareness of what was going on,” he noted.

Trump has dismissed the criticisms, labeling the ongoing controversy a part of “Democrat fraud.” He stated, “They’re absolutely crazy, spinning another Russian hoax, but this time it’s about what we call the Jeffrey Epstein scam.” He expressed hope for clarity soon, insisting it’s another scheme from Democrats.
