Dylan Novak, a youth pastor and founder of a celebrity evangelism initiative, shared insights about how he shared the gospel with Ozzy Osbourne, who recently passed away at age 76. In an interview this year, Novak recounted giving Osbourne a large print New Living Translation Bible, noting that they added names of individuals to the Bibles, including his own.
Osbourne was a significant figure in heavy metal, well-known as the frontman for Black Sabbath, who had his last performance in Birmingham, England, on July 5, where he needed to sit due to Parkinson’s disease.
Novak described Osbourne as “such a sweet man,” recalling how he showed him the Bible and the excitement that lit up his face. Osbourne had previously mentioned in an interview that he found the Bible hard to understand, to which Novak responded by offering to help him grasp its meaning.
“The genuine excitement on his face was remarkable,” Novak said, recalling how Osbourne turned the Bible over and appreciated seeing his name on it, expressing heartfelt gratitude.
Impact of the Bible
Osbourne’s family confirmed how meaningful the Bible was to him. Two weeks later, during a meeting with Osbourne’s son, Jack, Novak learned that not only did his father treasure the Bible but also shared it with visitors at their home.
“I want you to know that it had a greater impact on my dad than you know… it’s on his bedside table,” Jack remarked.
Through an Instagram post earlier this year, Novak also documented sharing the gospel with Sharon, Kelly, and Jack Osbourne, featuring photos of their time together.
Following Osbourne’s final performance, Novak further expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to impact Jack’s father positively, emphasizing the importance of sharing faith.
The Gospel for All
Novak pointed out that even someone like Osbourne, often labeled the “Prince of Darkness,” can be reached through the gospel. He stressed that the message is crucial and relevant to everyone.
“We must remember that it’s important to listen to the gospel,” he said. “God sees us in one of two ways: saved or not saved. I was once lost but have been reborn, and we need to seize every opportunity to share this before it’s too late.”
Additionally, he noted that the size of one’s platform doesn’t matter in spreading good news. Every individual has a unique purpose, even if it’s meant for just one person.
“That’s worth everything,” he added. “Christians should share their joy and good news while they can.”
Wider Reach as a Celebrity Evangelist
Through his efforts, Novak claims to have shared the gospel with over 2,000 celebrities, including prominent figures like Osbourne, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Cruise, and Bill Murray.
Osbourne’s Faith
In past interviews, Ozzy spoke openly about his belief in God, identifying as a Christian, even if he didn’t regularly attend church.
“I believe in God. I don’t attend church, but I don’t think it’s necessary to believe in God,” he expressed in a 1992 interview clip.
Over time, he reiterated his Christian beliefs, stating he was baptized and had attended Sunday school, but that he had never been heavily involved in the church. He fondly reflected on heaven as a peaceful place, contrasting it with the world he found quite frightening.
