In a fascinating display, a robot known as “Xiao Hu,” though unarmed, was seen directing traffic and pedestrians on one of the busiest streets in Shanghai. This humanoid figure, resembling a police officer, took its position in the bustling Huamp district on a Wednesday evening.
During its demonstration, Xiao Hu sported a large white helmet, along with clothing featuring LED lights and reflective yellow fabric, which seemed quite eye-catching. It provided voice commands, including standard signals like “Red light, stop,” while guiding pedestrians through the intersection.
The robot’s physical gestures and spoken instructions were inspired by traditional Chinese traffic management methods, lending it an air of familiarity.
Officials from the Shanghai Public Safety Bureau mentioned that this initiative marked an early stage in the use of robots for traffic management, rather than a final implementation.
Xiao Hu is not only responsible for directing traffic but can also offer pedestrian guidance and respond to basic queries about traffic laws, which is pretty neat.
This robotic traffic cop, developed over a span of four years, is still in the testing phase. There is a hope among staff to eventually see such robots replacing human officers in busy areas and during significant events, which could be a game changer.
No specific timeline has been shared regarding when Xiao Hu might see broader deployment, and it’s unclear whether similar robots will appear in other districts of the city.
