Jets Offense Shifts Direction with New Talent
The approach to the offensive line for the Jets has completely changed compared to last year.
Olu Fashanu, last year’s first-round pick (No. 11), is expected to take on the left tackle position after starting seven games last season. Meanwhile, rookie Armand Membou, this year’s first-round pick (No. 7), is projected to start at right tackle.
Last season, the Jets relied on seasoned veterans Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses for their tackles, both of whom contributed to a collective 305 career starts. The new pair, however, brings slightly less experience with a total of 298 starts.
The focus on youth is unmistakable.
“There’s a lot of trust in this organization for both Armand and me,” Fashanu mentioned after practice, sounding quite the mentor. “I could go on about Armand—he’s incredibly hardworking and has an exciting future ahead.”
Fashanu played both tackle positions and right guard last year, performing decently with a 61.2 overall rating according to professional football metrics. He was initially brought in to learn from Smith and Moses, but injuries nudged him into a more significant role earlier than planned. With the new coaching staff, he’s now crucial in strengthening the Jets’ offensive line.
Coach Aaron Glenn praised Fashanu’s dedication, saying, “He committed several days to extra workouts, even on weekends. He’s really dedicated to ensuring he’s available and wants to be a key part of what we’re building for the O-line.”
“He’s a big, physical guy with long arms, the kind of build you want for your left tackle. I’m looking forward to watching him mature as camp progresses,” Glenn added.
Fashanu has made great strides this offseason and aims to increase his weight. However, his most significant growth has been in confidence.
“This year, I feel way more confident than last,” he commented. “Self-doubt is something we all deal with. I’ve focused on my mentality over the offseason and believe I’ll perform much better on the field.”
Fashanu, along with his teammates, is working on blocking techniques against standout Will McDonald IV, who had a breakout season last year and looks strong heading into training camp.
“He’s my biggest challenge right now,” Membou shared. “It’s a tough matchup against him. But it’s competitive, and I learn a lot after practices by asking for his feedback on my game.”
During practice, McDonald showcased his skills, winning two battles with impressive speed and power moves.
“It’s great for our players to face that caliber of competition,” Glenn remarked. “Not many can match the agility and speed they’ll encounter in this league. Daily practice will sharpen their skills and make the matchups interesting as we progress.”
