Johnson addresses the hunger crisis in Gaza: 'Hamas has taken the food'

House Speaker Comments on Gaza Situation

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) described images of starving individuals, including children from Gaza, as “disturbing and heartbreaking,” while asserting that Hamas had “stolen food.”

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Johnson presented images of hungry children emerging from Gaza. He was asked about Israel’s decision to implement a “tactical pause” amid rampant hunger concerns. Johnson cited Israeli officials, including US ambassador Yethiel Reiter, claiming that Hamas had taken “a huge amount of food” since hostilities began on October 7, 2023.

“The images are intrusive and heartbreaking,” he remarked. “We all want peace in the region.”

He went on to explain, “I spoke with my ambassador writer, the Israeli ambassador, and other officials. This is crucial. Since the conflict began, Israel has sent more than 94,000 trucks filled with food, enough for two million people in Gaza. However, Hamas stole a significant portion.”

Johnson declared the system as “broken,” criticizing the Israeli military’s actions and mentioning that a “new distribution channel” for food aid would be initiated starting tomorrow to provide assistance to those desperately in need.

He emphasized the necessity for the UN to collaborate with Israel to ensure that food reaches those most affected.

In response, “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker challenged Johnson’s claims, noting a New York Times article stating that Israeli forces had not found evidence of Hamas systematically stealing aid from the UN, which is the primary provider of emergency assistance to Gaza.

Over the weekend, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) criticized former President Trump’s approach to Gaza, advocating for an immediate ceasefire, aid for the affected areas, and the release of all hostages held by Hamas.

He stated, “The hunger and deaths of Palestinian children and civilians in the ongoing war zone is unacceptable.”
