Obama Urges Action on Gaza Starvation
Former President Obama called for urgent measures on Sunday to address what he described as a “preventable” starvation crisis in the Gaza Strip.
“While a lasting solution to the Gaza situation must involve the return of all hostages and a cessation of Israeli military actions, these reports underscore the immediate need to prevent innocent people from suffering and dying from hunger,” Obama stated. This message was part of a post linking to two articles from the New York Times shared on the platform X.
“Aid must reach the people in Gaza. There is absolutely no justification for withholding food and water from families,” he added in a follow-up post.
On the same day, Israeli forces announced a plan to implement a “tactical pause” in their operations in Gaza, citing the extent of the hunger crisis.
President Trump commented to reporters, claiming that Hamas was taking food meant for the residents of Gaza.
“When I see children, especially in recent weeks with people stealing food, it’s alarming. They’re also stealing money for food. It’s a mess out there,” he remarked.
He continued with, “It’s chaos, the entire area is in disarray. The Gaza Strip, you know, was intended for peace years ago, but that hasn’t worked out very well.”
The Israeli Army has reported, however, that there’s no verified evidence that Palestinian extremist groups have been systematically pilfering aid.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would restrict humanitarian aid to Gaza unless it did not bolster Hamas’s military capacity. He emphasized that Israel has to maintain this position, according to reports from The Jerusalem Post.
Netanyahu further mentioned that “the UN is spreading misinformation about Israel. They claim we block humanitarian supplies, but that isn’t true. There are safe corridors, and they have always existed, though now they are formally recognized.”
