Oklahoma state superintendent facing inquiry after board members claim to have seen naked women on his office television

An Oklahoma state director is under scrutiny after he claimed to have seen explicit images during a meeting last Thursday.

Ryan Walters, a prominent Republican and head of one of the nation’s underperforming education systems, reported to board members that he witnessed images of naked women on TV screens during a closed session for the Oklahoma State Board of Education.

One board member expressed disbelief at what she saw, saying, “I thought, ‘Those can’t be naked women,’ but then I couldn’t help but notice.” She described the moment as perplexing, grappling with what she believed to be an optical illusion, only to confirm her suspicions when identifying private body parts on screen.

Another executive, Ryan Deatherage, mentioned that he could not view the explicit footage as Walters’ back was turned towards the television.

Walters later reacted with surprise, stating, “I’m trying to focus and hear, but I found it difficult.” He also noted that he was unsure how to process the situation at that moment.

Deatherage mentioned how calm the meeting appeared, lacking any explanation or acknowledgment from Walters about the images behind him.

On Sunday, Walters publicly denied the allegations, labeling them as “categorically false.”

In his statement, he asserted, “These are desperate tactics from those fearing real change. They’re attacking me and the values of the Oklahomans who supported my vision.”

Other board members commented on Walters’ apparent agitation, implying he was visibly shaken during the discussion.

Walters had previously gained national attention for his education policies. He has pushed for strict measures regarding classroom conduct, especially around LGBTQ+ issues, which have drawn criticism from progressive groups.

Notably, he also eased certain separations between church and state, advocating for the teaching of the Bible in public schools framed as historical texts.

Deatherage and Carson suggested that Walters should adhere to the same accountability standards placed on educators, highlighting that the board maintains strict oversight of educational certifications.

The identity of those responsible for the explicit images remains unclear, as does the rationale for their inclusion in a formal meeting. The investigation into the incident is being led by the Department of Management and Enterprise Services.
