Investigation into Disturbing Discovery in Philadelphia Home
Authorities have uncovered a bizarre and unsettling scene in the home of a Philadelphia felon, leading them to investigate potential connections to two missing women. The home contained an alarming array of chemicals, firearms, a 55-gallon drum, and even a hidden compartment, along with a handwritten note that referenced infamous serial killer Ted Bundy.
Eugene Horsch, 44, was taken into custody on drug and firearms charges following a search conducted by the FBI and local police at his run-down residence in the Olney neighborhood. Philadelphia Deputy Chief Frank Vanois provided updates about the investigation during a press conference.
The investigation kicked off after a U.S. park ranger overheard a heated argument between Horsch and his girlfriend near Independence Hall. Concerned by what he heard, particularly when the girlfriend exclaimed, “You’re going to hurt me,” the ranger notified law enforcement, who quickly arrived on the scene.
Subsequent inquiry revealed that Horsch possessed a counterfeit Drug Enforcement Agency badge along with a switchblade and two firearms with missing serial numbers.
In a strange twist, Horsch’s girlfriend held a fake identification that bore her photo but carried the name of a woman reported missing from Kensington in February 2023. Authorities yet to disclose her identity continue to connect the dots. The girlfriend, not familiar with the missing woman, expressed concerns that something terrible might have occurred.
Authorities then proceeded to Horsch’s three-story home, where they found a concerning amount of hazardous chemicals, a 55-gallon drum linked to a water pipe, and around 120 pieces of ballistic evidence.
Given the nature of the chemicals discovered, law enforcement contacted the FBI for assistance in identifying the substances and potential risks involved. Vanois noted that the basement held various chemicals in bottles that could be dangerously reactive if mixed.
An unsigned note was also found, discussing harming others and mentioning Ted Bundy. In part, it stated, “When you act on emotion, you get into trouble,” and implied a sense of readiness for violent action, which was quite unsettling.
Officials are attempting to ascertain the author of this letter and weigh whether it was a serious threat or merely a prank.
In addition, a bank card belonging to a woman missing since 2023 and a death certificate for another woman who passed away last year were also located in the house. Police also found drugs on the premises and indications that Horsch was attempting to cultivate more narcotics.
The revelations have alarmed the family of Amy McHale, who disappeared in 2016 and was last known to be at Horsch’s residence. Her daughter, Amanda Stoffer, relayed a strong belief that they had found her mother amidst the investigation.
Although no human remains were uncovered in the home, there have been rumors circulating in the community. Some urns found inside bore the name of a family member, and homicide detectives are currently leading the investigation.
Horsch has a criminal history, including a recent assault case in Philadelphia, and is facing additional charges outside the city. His attorney noted that his father, RC Horsch, had a complicated past of his own, hinting that some of the chemicals might be linked to him. RC Horsch had a troubling history, including a previous federal investigation into meth production.
Officials, equipped with protective gear, entered the residence over the weekend as federal experts from Quantico joined the investigation. The FBI has not yet provided additional comments.
