President Trump recently informed reporters about his intention to expedite the timeline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, especially in light of the ongoing assaults on Ukrainian cities.
On July 14, Trump stated that Russia would encounter additional sanctions and tariffs if it did not halt its military operations within 50 days, setting a deadline of September 2. However, he mentioned on Monday that he plans to move this deadline closer.
“We thought things had settled down before, but then Putin starts deploying rockets in places like Kiev, leading to many casualties, including in nursing homes,” Trump remarked alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “You see bodies on the streets, and I believe that’s not how this should unfold. We’ll see how it develops. I’m quite disappointed—especially in President Putin.”
“In my opinion, I think I’ve already figured out what will happen to him, so I’ve given him a tighter timeline,” Trump added.
Earlier this month, he warned that failure to reach a ceasefire within the next 50 days would result in the U.S. imposing “significant” tariffs on Russia. He has suggested a 100% “secondary” tariff aimed at countries trading with Russia to further impact its economy.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022 as troops were amassed at the border. Trump has campaigned with a promise to resolve the conflict within a day.
Although Trump has previously voiced frustrations regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s strategies, he seems to be growing increasingly perturbed with Putin, especially as missile strikes on Ukraine persist despite calls from the White House for a ceasefire.
Earlier this month, Trump confirmed that NATO member countries would finance the acquisition of additional U.S. military equipment for Ukraine.
