Mississippi Animal Shelter Worker Fatally Attacked by Dogs
Tragic reports indicate that a worker at a Mississippi animal shelter lost his life after being attacked by two pit bulls. These dogs had previously been rescued from a dog fighting ring.
Clifford Phillips Jr., 57, was fatally injured while attempting to secure a dog at the Second Chance Animal Alliance in Yarobusha County, where he had devoted two years of service. A long-time friend, Dudley Woods, shared that Phillips was trying to put another dog into a pen and that things escalated quickly.
Woods recounted the incident, explaining that when one dog attempted to escape, Phillips tried to intervene. Unfortunately, the dog attacked him instead, and as chaos ensued, the other dog joined in the assault.
“It was all captured on video,” Woods told reporters.
First responders shot one of the attacking dogs in a desperate attempt to rescue Phillips, but, sadly, he could not be saved. Reports suggest that additional dogs were also later euthanized due to the incident.
The two pit bulls involved were among a group of 12 dogs taken into custody following a court-ordered action related to allegations of animal abuse and dog fighting.
The Second Chance Animal Alliance has stated that they are cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
In a statement, the shelter expressed their grief over Phillips’ death, mentioning the difficulty they’ve faced with questions and speculation since the tragedy occurred. They emphasized their commitment to the safety of volunteers and staff. “We take this very seriously,” they asserted.
Tributes to Phillips paint a picture of a kind, friendly individual. According to his obituary, he was “quiet, caring, and well-liked,” often engaging others in conversation and sharing stories. His love for music was well-known, particularly his deep singing voice, which he showcased at Silva Rena Baptist Church.
