Trump's Momentum Overwhelms Critics Who Predicted His Downfall for Months

Trump Secures Historic Trade Deal with the EU

After months of stalled negotiations, President Donald Trump finalized a significant trade agreement with the European Union on Sunday. This deal aims to create a more balanced trading environment for American businesses with one of their largest trading partners.

During a meeting in Turnberry, Scotland, EU President Ursula von der Leyen agreed to a 15% tariff on EU goods entering the U.S., committed to purchasing $700 billion worth of American energy, and pledged an additional $600 billion in investments in the U.S.

The White House described this agreement as a major achievement, stating, “President Trump’s agreement with the European Union implements important structural reforms and commitments that enhance American industry, workers, and national security.”

Von der Leyen emphasized the need for balance, noting, “We have a surplus, while the U.S. has a deficit, and we need to address that.” She made these comments during a press conference with Trump.

An ambassador remarked that the deal serves as a strong indication that “Trump Juggernaut” is making its mark on the EU, suggesting that Trump’s negotiation style has effectively been felt by European leaders.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban defended von der Leyen, calling her a “featherweight” negotiator regarding her dealings with Trump. He remarked, “This wasn’t a contract they made; it was Trump having his way with her.”

In a tweet, the White House celebrated the agreement, summarizing the deal as a significant breakthrough in U.S.-EU relations.

The agreement aims to reduce the trade deficit that has troubled the U.S. since Trump’s tariff advocacy began in March. The U.S.’s trade deficit with the EU reportedly stood at around $236 billion in 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Critics, including voices from legacy media, expressed skepticism about Trump’s negotiation tactics, suggesting they could reinforce a united EU stance against the U.S.

A recent article suggested that Trump’s strategies might unintentionally strengthen the EU’s position, with a reporter noting that the administration’s trade negotiations might push Europe to explore partnerships beyond the U.S.

Despite mixed reactions, including declarations that Europe is weary of Trump’s trade threats, the deal represents a notable shift. Some observers argue that the unity suggested by European leaders might not translate into cohesive action in the face of Trump’s assertive policies.

French political figures voiced their discontent, claiming that this deal is a sign of the EU’s submission to U.S. demands. Marine Le Pen called it an “EU failure,” stating that it undermines the bloc’s strength and autonomy.

Amidst all the critiques, Trump’s unconventional approach to negotiating tariffs led to success that many had doubted would be possible. As time will tell, the implications of this agreement might reshape future trade discussions between the U.S. and Europe.
