Marco Rubio and Pope Leo XIV Come Together to Strengthen US-Holy See Collaboration Amid Trump’s Criticism

Marco Rubio Meets Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican

On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. This gathering aimed to enhance the relationship between the United States and the Catholic Church, even in the wake of recent criticisms from President Donald Trump regarding the pontiff.

This was the second private rendezvous between Rubio and the Pope since Rubio took office. The meeting is part of a broader agenda that also involves discussions with high-ranking officials from both the Holy See and the Italian Republic, all intended to strengthen bilateral ties. According to a State Department preview earlier in the week, Rubio plans to address issues related to the Middle East during his conversations, as well as shared interests between the Western Hemisphere and Italy, specifically focusing on security and strategic collaboration.

U.S. Apostolic Nuncio Brian Birch indicated that the visit would revolve around themes of deep cooperation and common objectives.

Birch mentioned, “I think his visit reflects our strong desire for the type of engagement that the Holy See values: fraternity and real dialogue,” in comments to reporters following the meeting.

The meeting took place right before the one-year anniversary of the Pope taking office, amidst ongoing criticisms from President Trump, who has expressed dissatisfaction with the Pope’s stance on various issues. Recently, Trump labeled the Pope “weak on crime and terrible on foreign policy” during a speech, especially after the Pope criticized assertions that God favors one side in conflicts.

Trump reiterated his disappointment in an interview earlier in the week. Despite a truce with Iran, he suggested that the Pope’s dialogue could be endangering the lives of many, especially regarding the Iranian nuclear situation. Trump emphasized that he feels strongly about preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and called for a firmer stance against such developments.

In contrast, the Pope has remained steadfast in advocating for peace and diplomacy, refusing to back down despite the criticism. He expressed dismay over personal attacks from Trump, stating that he is unafraid to express church teachings.

Rubio, when pressed about the apparent rift between Trump and the Pope, downplayed any notion of deep divisions. He explained that the visit had been long planned and highlighted the United States’ support for humanitarian efforts through the Vatican, notably offering assistance to the Cuban populace.

Rubio affirmed, “The Pope serves as a representative of Christ and leads the Catholic Church,” reiterating the significance of the Vatican’s role on a global scale.

Birch echoed similar sentiments, arguing that perceived divisions are overstated. He stressed the importance of dialogue to address differing opinions and ensure understanding moving forward.

While some may interpret the interactions between the Pope and Trump as contentious, Rubio urged observers to recognize the nuances and complexities involved in such high-level discussions. The two leaders, it seems, have a considerable amount of ground to cover, as both seek to navigate their positions amid broader geopolitical challenges.
