Billy Joel Addresses DUI Rumors

Billy Joel recently clarified some longstanding rumors about being charged with driving under the influence. In a new two-part HBO documentary titled “Billy Joel: And It Goes,” he took the opportunity to set the record straight.

The 76-year-old musician, who has been diagnosed with brain disorders, mentioned that while he has had several car accidents over the years, alcohol was not a factor. He expressed, “I didn’t like the tabloid presses. There’s this rumor, for example, that I have all these DUIs. It never happened.”

Joel added, “But people keep repeating the myths. ‘Oh, he has so many DUIs.’ I didn’t have a DUI.” He argued that the media can be harsh, admitting that it’s hard to ignore constant scrutiny.

Reflecting on his past, Joel noted that he had several car crashes from 2002 onwards but indicated they stemmed from personal struggles rather than substance abuse. He described a period post-9/11 as particularly tough, explaining, “My mind wasn’t right. I wasn’t focused.”

Recently, Joel revealed that he has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, suggesting his condition has affected his vision, balance, and hearing. He stated that recent performances have shown improvement, though he had to cancel tour dates due to the condition and subsequent physical therapy.

Joel, who married his fourth wife Alexis Roderick on July 4, 2015, has two daughters with her. He has also opened up about his past relationships, including a former marriage to supermodel Christie Brinkley.

In terms of treatment, the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the skull can be serious, especially for older adults, and may necessitate surgical intervention to manage. Despite the challenges he has faced, Joel’s focus remains on recovery and, perhaps, the music to come.
