As the trade deadline approached on Thursday, the Yankees found themselves more constrained than ever, especially with a major sports figure, Luka Dončić, in attendance. General Manager Brian Cashman has been focusing on acquiring pitching help after a busy weekend aimed at enhancing the team’s lineup. Unfortunately, against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, the Yankees’ offense fell flat, losing 4-2.
Rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler faced challenges, giving up three runs while walking four and striking out five, marking his first loss in three major league games. The Yankees (57-49) struggled, only managing three hits over the final eight innings, which contributes to their disappointing record of 15-24 since June 13.
Dončić, who recently made headlines by moving from the Mavericks to the Lakers, had interactions with several Yankees players before the game, including the sidelined Aaron Judge.
In his first two outings after being called up from Triple-A, Schlittler showcased a potent four-seam fastball, which helped him accumulate 10 strikeouts over 10 and a third innings in earlier victories against the Mariners and the Jays this month. Prior to the game, manager Aaron Boone highlighted Schlittler’s fastball as “his calling card,” though he did express the need for improvements to the rookie’s secondary pitches.
In the opening inning, Schlittler was taken deep by All-Star Junior Caminero, who launched a two-run homer to left field. Fortunately, the damage could have been worse; despite two additional runners on base during that inning, Ladys Bellinger managed to catch a line drive for the third out.
The Yankees answered back with a two-run effort, capitalizing on a walk and a single from Rays starter Drew Rasmussen. Schlittler held firm until the fifth inning, when Josh Lowe delivered an RBI single that put the Rays back in the lead.
Brent Headrick replaced Schlittler and successfully struck out two inherited runners, keeping the Yankees within reach. Rasmussen dominated, retiring 12 consecutive batters, bridging the first and fifth innings, until Jasson Domínguez broke the streak with a couple of singles.
The Rays extended their lead in the eighth inning, courtesy of Yandy Díaz’s sacrifice fly. Luke Weaver was charged with that run. Although recently acquired Amed Rosario managed to hit a single as a pinch hitter in the eighth, the Yankees were unable to come any closer to closing the gap.
