Experts warn that the food crisis in Gaza represents a ‘worst-case scenario’

Gaza food crisis is ‘worst-case scenario,’ say experts

The situation in the Gaza Strip has reached a dire point, with a major international organization focusing on food security warning that immediate action is crucial to prevent a catastrophic rise in hunger-related deaths.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) issued an alert but refrained from making an official declaration of famine. This warning follows widespread international concern, especially after images of malnourished children surfaced and reports of starvation-related deaths increased.

This crisis emerged after Israel restricted humanitarian aid flows amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas, which escalated following the attacks on October 7, 2023.

Recently, President Trump remarked on the alarming situation in Gaza, highlighting the “real starvation” present and noting a shift in his stance from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In his comments, the President suggested the possibility of a “food center” being established in Gaza. However, his administration faces scrutiny regarding its support for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in the United States, criticized for its chaotic and ineffective distribution of aid.

International pressure, particularly from France, has risen in the wake of last week’s recognition of an independent Palestinian state, prompting the Israeli government to announce a temporary suspension for aid distribution over the weekend.

Israel stated it had opened additional humanitarian corridors, yet aid workers in Gaza argue these measures are inadequate to prevent widespread deaths. Oxfam’s Bushra Khalidi criticized the situation, describing the current aid efforts as merely theatrical. She explained that air drops of food could be harmful, adding to confusion and suffering, as people have been injured or killed by falling supplies.

The Gaza Ministry of Health reported that 147 individuals, including 88 children, have died due to malnutrition and hunger since October 2023. The death toll from Hamas’s actions is estimated at around 1,200, with 251 hostages taken during the 2023 assault on Israel.

The health ministry does not separate the victims based on their affiliations, though these figures have gained recognition from the UN and other international bodies. Meanwhile, Israel estimates the number of Palestinian extremists killed during the conflict to be around 20,000.

In early July, the IPC indicated that malnutrition was rapidly escalating in Gaza. Between April and mid-July, over 20,000 children were treated for acute malnutrition, with more than 3,000 classified as severely malnourished.

“Many children in our care have expressed a desire to die,” said Rachel Cummings, humanitarian director at Save the Children International, reflecting on a recent clinic visit that left her deeply affected by the silent suffering of so many. “They were just too sick to even cry,” she noted.

Dr. Tarek Lubani, a Canadian physician working in Gaza, believes the reported numbers understate the malnutrition crisis. He suggested the real figures might be about ten percent higher than recorded, emphasizing that many deaths due to malnutrition may go unreported due to other prevailing health issues.

Lubani also noted that families are struggling to donate blood for injured relatives because of a lack of nutritious food in their diets. He shared his own experience of losing significant weight due to insufficient food availability, saying he recently had only a few meals to eat.

The IPC report underscored that effective humanitarian aid can only flow during ceasefires, advocating for expanded supply routes and restoration of essential services to ensure safe access to aid.

In diplomatic developments, Trump’s envoy engaged with Hamas last week and condemned the group as a barrier to aid distribution. He mentioned exploring alternative options to retrieve hostages and develop a more stable environment for Gaza’s residents, where approximately 20 hostages from Israel remain in captivity.
