New Jersey Gubernatorial Race: Sherrill Leads Ciattarelli
In the latest independent poll regarding the New Jersey governor’s race, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) has taken a lead over Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli. The Fairy Dickinson University poll, released on Tuesday, shows Sherrill with 45% support while 16% of respondents remain undecided. This race could be significant for both parties as they gear up for the midterm elections next year.
The dynamics illustrate solid backing for party candidates, with 87% of Democrats supporting Sherrill and 86% of Republicans backing Ciattarelli. However, given that voter registrations tilt toward Democrats, Ciattarelli might need to attract independents and some Democratic voters to secure a win.
Dan Cassino, executive director of FDU Public Opinion, remarked, “Unless something goes horribly wrong, partisans will typically support their respective candidates. While Republicans are closing in, the number of Democrats in New Jersey still surpasses them. To emerge victorious, Ciattarelli must begin to draw in more independents and Democrats.”
The poll indicates Sherrill holds a slight edge over Ciattarelli among independents, garnering 30% as opposed to Ciattarelli’s 23%. Interestingly, 41% of those surveyed are still undecided. Furthermore, participants were queried about the importance of local versus national issues in their voting decisions.
Responses showed that, while support for candidates by party remained stable, there was a noticeable uptick in independent support for GOP candidates, particularly on local issues. Notably, Ciattarelli seems to be walking a fine line regarding his association with Trump. He needs to appeal to Trump supporters without nationalizing the race or alienating voters who may disapprove of the current political landscape. Conversely, Sherrill faces no downside in criticizing Trump as much as she wants.
This polling outcome arrives on the heels of another independent survey from the Rutgers University Eagleton Public Opinion Center, which indicated Sherrill leading by a larger margin of 20 points. Nevertheless, Ciattarelli’s campaign strategists pointed out that the polling results from New Jersey may not accurately reflect Republican support, suggesting recent outlier tendencies in polling methodologies.
Historically, Ciattarelli was the first Republican candidate in the 2021 gubernatorial race, losing to Governor Phil Murphy (D) by just 3 points, with Trump exceeding expectations in a close contest, losing the state by only about six points. The Fairy Dickinson poll was conducted from July 17-23 among 806 registered voters, with a standard sampling error of 3.4%.
