The Trump administration is planning to roll back pollution regulations that require energy companies to limit greenhouse gas emissions. This has sparked significant concern among environmental activists, who are calling the announcement “terrifying.”
During a speech at an auto dealership in Indiana, Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), revealed a proposal to eliminate these rules.
“If confirmed, today’s announcement will be the largest deregulation action in U.S. history,” Zeldin stated.
He expressed concerns regarding the EPA’s greenhouse gas inspections, saying that the emissions in question weren’t limited to carbon dioxide and that the findings hadn’t undergone independent evaluation.
Under the Trump administration, along with a Republican-controlled Congress, two out of three existing programs to regulate tailpipe emissions have already been weakened or ended. The new proposal aims to dismantle the third remaining regulation.
However, it’s worth mentioning that any changes to these rules are not expected to take immediate effect. There will be a public comment period, and it’s likely that various legal challenges will arise.
Zeldin reiterated, “If finalized, today’s announcement will be the largest deregulation action in U.S. history.” While some in the oil and energy sectors view this as a significant victory, it has raised alarm among environmental groups.
Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund, has issued a warning that climate change is likely to worsen because of the Trump administration’s actions. He suggested that Americans are already feeling the impacts—stronger hurricanes, severe heat waves, and rising flood risks—and these climate-related disasters will only intensify, making life and health costs higher.
“These decisions lead to predictable outcomes. Without enforcement limits on pollution, the adverse effects will increase, making life both more expensive and more hazardous,” he added. “For everyday Americans, these interests won’t improve.”
Moms Clean Air Force has also reacted with a statement criticizing Zeldin’s proposal, calling it “shameful” and “reckless.” They pointed out that families across the U.S. are feeling the adverse effects of rising temperatures due to intensified heat waves and floods that are becoming more common.
