Sen. Cory Booker Criticizes Fellow Democrats on Senate Floor
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) took to the Senate floor to voice his frustrations with his fellow Democrats, accusing them of being complicit in supporting President Trump’s agenda, suggesting they need to show more backbone.
This outburst followed reports that he and Senator Katherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) were in a heated discussion regarding a Booker-sponsored bill focused on policing. According to Andrew Desiderio from Punchbowl News, the tensions escalated over a “bipartisan police package.” Booker’s remarks came in response to Cortez Masto’s motion to expedite the passing of this legislation related to law enforcement.
The confrontation occurred after Booker resisted the motion from the Nevada senator, emphasizing the need for changes in various measures to ensure equitable distribution of resources due to adjustments made by the Department of Justice regarding funding programs.
During his speech, Booker suggested that Democrats might need a “wake-up call” and criticized universities and law firms for “yielding” to Trump’s influence. He remarked on the state of higher education, claiming that institutions designed to uphold free speech were compromising under the administration’s pressure.
Continuing his critique, he expressed disappointment towards lawmakers who, he believes, have failed to adequately support states like Connecticut, Illinois, and New York with essential resources. “It’s time for Democrats to have a backbone,” he declared. “We must draw a line and fight.” He also expressed that his motivations should not be questioned, as he represents police officers and the Constitution of his state.
While he chose not to challenge the two bills put forth by Cortez Masto directly, he did express opposition to a proposal he felt unfairly restricted resources for states ranging from California to New York.
Booker concluded by emphasizing the troubling trend among Democrats, suggesting they are, in effect, collaborating with Trump. “If we’re truly committed to supporting police, we need to ensure our legislation benefits all police officers, including those in New Jersey,” he stressed, highlighting the importance of not aligning with an administration that doesn’t understand their values.
