A couple riding an e-bike along some trails in Canada encountered two grizzly bears this past weekend, leading to a frightening situation. Local authorities mentioned that their quick thinking, particularly the woman’s use of bear spray, likely saved their lives during the attack.
This incident unfolded around 4:30 PM on Saturday, July 26th, near the Kutenai River. According to the British Columbia Conservation Officer Services (COS), the bears were surprised as they approached, which prompted the attack.
In the heat of the moment, the woman heard her husband scream and then saw one bear charging at her. As she grabbed the bear spray, she realized her husband was also being attacked by another grizzly. She managed to deploy the spray effectively, frightening both bears away.
Afterward, the man suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery.
Dave Webster, an inspector with COS, praised the couple for being well-prepared. He noted that they had readily accessible bear spray, and they knew how to use it effectively. He advised that others in bear country should take similar precautions.
Following the incident, officers spoke with the couple, examined the area, and consulted with wildlife experts. They concluded that the bears acted defensively, likely taken by surprise due to the dense trail. There were no signs that the bears had been stalking or hunting them and no recent bear attacks reported in that area.
In the days following, officers searched the vicinity but found no evidence of the bears. They also closed three trails and set up traps, but no captures were made. A follow-up search returned no sightings either.
Since the bears appeared to be acting out of self-defense, wildlife officials opted not to relocate them. Authorities reinforced the importance of bear spray as an effective means to deter bear attacks, likening it to a necessary safety device when venturing through wildlife regions.
