Trump Imposes 25 Percent Tariff on India, 'Punishment' for Supporting Russia

US Imposes Tariffs on India Amid Trade Concerns

The US plans to apply a 25% tariff on goods from India, which will also include a “penalty” related to India’s continued military purchases and energy deals with Russia during the ongoing Ukraine conflict, as stated by President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Trump remarked, “India is our friend,” but pointed out that trade between the two nations has been minimal because India’s tariffs are exceptionally high, and it employs significant non-monetary trade barriers, which is quite challenging for businesses.” He shared this sentiment in a post.

He elaborated, saying, “They predominantly buy military equipment from Russia and, along with China, are among Russia’s largest energy purchasers. This is happening while Russia is engaged in hostilities in Ukraine. Thus, in addition to the 25% tariff, these penalties will start affecting India come August.”

When reporters inquired if the deal with India had been finalized, Trump responded candidly, “No, it’s not,” as reported by The Hill. Just a day later, the customs announcement confirmed the U.S. stance.

The Indian government, through its Ministry of Commerce, issued a statement acknowledging Trump’s comments regarding trade, indicating that they are currently assessing its implications. The statement added that India and the U.S. have been working towards fair and mutually beneficial trade agreements.

This announcement follows Trump’s recent success in negotiating a significant trade arrangement with the European Union and leveraging trade discussions to facilitate a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, as noted by Breitbart News.

The deal with the EU, revealed over the weekend, eliminated all tariffs on U.S. exports to Europe and instituted a 15% baseline tariff on imports from Europe.

In an interview with Breitbart News in Scotland, Trump discussed the role trade played in achieving a ceasefire in Southeast Asia. He recalled telling stakeholders, “If you’re going to engage in hostilities, then I won’t trade with you.” He mentioned engaging with prime ministers from both Thailand and Cambodia, highlighting their desire to prevent conflict.

Trump’s threat of tariffs has become a typical approach for addressing international matters. His frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin has escalated, as he set a two-week deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

If this deadline is ignored, Trump indicated he would impose 100% secondary tariffs on countries conducting business with Russia, intending to influence the Russian economy and encourage Putin towards peace.
