Concerns About Political Statements in New York City
Lara Trump, who is Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law and a host on Fox News, expressed concerns about the political landscape during a segment on Wednesday.
In a discussion about Zohran Mamdani’s candidacy, Sean Hannity pressed Trump about how voters in the city should react to Mamdani’s past statements regarding policing. Mamdani had previously made anti-police remarks, and when asked if he regretted them, he sidestepped the question.
“It’s remarkable, Sean. Suddenly, during an election year, he changes his tune. This is typical of Democrats. Now that he’s looking at election, he’s saying things to get votes,” Trump remarked. She pointed out that Mamdani had previously called for refunding the police, a position she believes will now be ignored.
Trump highlighted the decrease in hiring within the NYPD, attributing it partly to budget cuts influenced by the influx of illegal immigration. “They need officers who are committed, not those who believe social workers can take over their roles,” she added.
Following the tragic death of George Floyd in May 2020, Mamdani had called for defunding the New York Police Department, labeling them as “racist” and a threat to public safety.
In light of a recent mass shooting in Manhattan that involved NYPD officers among the victims, Mamdani commented that his previous remarks were made out of “frustration.” He seemed to imply there was no regret in his past stance.
Trump countered this by noting that morale among law enforcement remains high, especially with support from President Trump. “It’s important to remember,” she said, “the next mayor of New York City will have significant impacts on crime rates. I wouldn’t want to live there myself,” she asserted, cautioning against trusting Mamdani’s last-minute changes in perspective.
After Mamdani won the Democratic nomination for mayor, both Republican and Democratic candidates criticized his socialist views.
