Berlin Calls for Initiating Steps to Acknowledge Palestinian State

Negotiations for Palestinian Statehood

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadefel stated on Thursday that the creation of a Palestinian state will follow negotiations aimed at a two-state solution. He emphasized that the current process is moving beyond previous dependencies.

“The two-state solution is the only viable option to ensure peace, security, and dignity for both sides,” Wadefel noted, shortly before embarking on a trip to Israeli and Palestinian territories. Reports have emerged about various nations considering recognizing the Palestinian state.

“For Germany, the acknowledgment of Palestinian statehood is more of a conclusion to this process, but we must begin that process now,” he added.

His comments come amid a wave of declarations by countries intending to recognize Palestine, some even rewarding Hamas for its aggressive actions against Israel.

On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to recognize Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September. He remarked that Canada has long aimed for a two-state solution, asserting that “a viable, sovereign Palestinian state can coexist peacefully with Israel.”

Breitbart’s Joel Pollack highlighted some uncertainty around Hamas’s role and the specifics of Carney’s statements regarding achieving this vision.

This development aligns Canada with France, which has also expressed intent to recognize the Palestinian state. The UK indicated it would follow suit unless specific terms, including a ceasefire in Gaza, are agreed upon by Israel.

In reaction, Israel’s Foreign Ministry criticized Canada’s announcement, labeling it a “reward for Hamas” that hampers international mediating efforts aimed at achieving a Gaza ceasefire and securing the release of hostages.

“Canada’s shift in stance at this juncture rewards Hamas and undermines efforts for a ceasefire and the release of hostages,” the statement conveyed.
