That heavy feeling: Stars express sadness over canceled Colbert

That heavy feeling: Stars express sadness over canceled Colbert

The Mourning Continues

This week, Sandra Oh visited a now-cancelled episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” I suppose we’re all feeling the effects of Paramount and CBS on the late-night scene.

Late-night TV appears to be in decline, and frankly, it feels like it’s heading toward a “suicide” after its apparent death.

While she intended to share a laugh, it certainly wasn’t her last sentimental moment on the CBS Soundstage.

The left seems to be struggling with the loss of what was their go-to DNC platform. A silver lining? The show has gained a bit of a revival in reviews since the news broke.

Perhaps CBS will end up losing $39 million instead of the anticipated $40 million this year…

Is “Spin” Running Out of Steam?

This sequel might not hit the mark.

I’ve caught a glimpse of “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.” After 51 years, the original trio—Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Christopher Guest—returns, including director Rob Reiner, known for the 1984 mockumentary classic.

The trailer is dropping just two months ahead of its September 12th debut—not exactly a great omen.

It’s not exactly the real trailer, yet it does throw in references to Stormy Daniels. Was that a dig from 2018?

It seems Reiner, who perhaps embodies Trump Madness, may bring some of his challenges to the screen. I get it, but despite everything, I’m still searching for a laugh in that trailer. A couple of smiles are genuine, but really, this comedy classic deserves a more impactful sequel.

Brain Drain

Similar to others in news media, the late-night host seems to have sidestepped the topic entirely while inadvertently stumbling through a single term associated with the White House.

So many jokes are left untouched. Have we only seen one “weekend at Barneys” joke in the past four years?

And now, one of these chatty hosts wants to turn the tables. How? By persuading us that it’s Trump who’s heading out for lunch this time?

Seriously.

Charlamagne Tha God used his platform to assert that Trump’s dementia is a valid concern that shouldn’t be ignored.

His evidence? Some rather selective video edits that reveal his less-than-bright moments.

Late-night TV can’t fade away quickly enough, but at this pace, it feels destined for an early “suicide”…

The Throne House

Perhaps they’ll achieve the privacy they’ve been after.

Harry and Meghan—do we even need to mention their last name?—seem to be struggling with their Netflix deal. Streamers are saying they won’t be renewing the $100 million contract originally signed when they were still a semi-royal couple.

Their latest projects have flopped with viewers, making any renewal unlikely. As for the human flaws? “South Park” has a few ideas on how to work together…

Hollywood’s Distribution Dilemma

I could really use Terry Gilliam’s hat right now.

Monty Python legends have turned into big names, yet their upcoming projects seem stuck. He’s mentioned no one’s eager to pick up the tab for his next venture.

And he’s not alone.

Renowned directors like Kathryn Bigelow, John Waters, and Francis Ford Coppola are having difficulty getting their latest works off the ground. Coppola, for instance, has thrown a hefty sum from his vineyard into “Megalopolis,” one of the more costly flops of 2024.

Hollywood seems more risk-averse than ever, even established directors can’t assure funding for their projects. Maybe Gilliam will hit it lucky with a gender-swapped “Ferris Bueller Holiday” reboot…

“Hitler” Hacking Shoes

At this point, Jimmy Kimmel might be begging for his return from summer vacation. My go-to late-night host is on his knees this month, but he has a guest on board.

Actor Alan Cumming, perhaps best known among nerds for his role as Nightcrawler in the “X-Men” series, stepped in to host “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” earlier this week, and I was, frankly, proud of Kimmel.

He made a comparison between the Trump administration and Nazi Germany while evoking images of concentration camps.

How are you doing in America? Seriously, how’s it going, aside from being a nation that has seemingly reintroduced concentration camps and taken health care away from 17 million people to provide tax cuts to billionaires? Other than that, is it alright? I wouldn’t have guessed.

Everything you want to stand out. No jokes seem to surface amid rants worthy of a “view.” The truth, as they say. Kimmel and company have their critics, but you’ve got to appreciate their consistency.
