Golf is an incredibly challenging sport for everyone, without exception. That’s part of what makes it so surprising.

Just when you think you’re starting to get the hang of it, the game reminds you how elusive that understanding can be. We’ve all experienced that moment. While true perfection may be unattainable, getting close can still have its rewards.

This realization holds true for both the elite players and the everyday golfers. I had the opportunity to chat with Cam Smith recently as he and Louis Oosthuizen talked about the LIV Golf Team Championship in Michigan.

During our discussion, Cam reflected on his season, noting it hadn’t quite met his expectations, especially in the major tournaments. He seemed to be genuinely contemplating his game, and I was curious about his mindset and how he planned to overcome these challenges during competition.

“Regardless of whether you’re playing well or struggling, there’s always something to learn in golf. It’s such a fascinating game,” Cam shared.

“It’s been tough, honestly. I can’t quite pinpoint what’s off. My swing feels solid, better than ever even, yet the results aren’t showing. It’s frustrating because I’m hitting the ball well but not playing my best golf.”

“I need to work through this mentally. I think I’ve lost some confidence, but it’s coming back, slowly. It’s really about making the right shots through dedication.”

“I believe it’s just a matter of time. I don’t see it as a technical issue but rather a minor setback. Soon enough, things will turn around.”

This perspective isn’t limited to just golf; it can apply to almost every aspect of life. We all face challenges, and sometimes it feels like the tools we have aren’t enough. Occasionally, the results just don’t materialize. Such moments can shake our spirit, much like in golf.

It’s refreshing to hear professional athletes talk honestly like this, and I really admire Cam Smith for being open about his struggles. I think fans, including those from his LIV team, will connect with him on a deeper level, beyond just wanting him to succeed.
