RNC Chair Formally Declares Senate Candidacy in North Carolina with Support from Trump

RNC Chair Michael Whatley Announces Senate Run in North Carolina

Michael Whatley, the chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), made an official announcement on Thursday regarding his candidacy for the 2026 Senate race in North Carolina.

In a statement shared on social media, Whatley expressed his feelings, stating that he is “humbled and excited” to embark on this Senate campaign. He urged supporters for their votes, “support, and prayers.” Notably, he has garnered support from former President Donald Trump, who posts on social media implying that, should Whatley enter the North Carolina race, he would receive “full support.”

Additionally, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Tim Scott have also shown their backing for Whatley. Thune praised Whatley’s leadership of the RNC, highlighting his successful navigation through monumental campaigns and expressing excitement over Whatley potentially becoming North Carolina’s next U.S. Senator.

Scott echoed similar sentiments, referring to Whatley as a “strong American conservative” and emphasizing his capability to secure victories for Republicans in North Carolina. He expressed confidence that Whatley’s candidacy would help maintain the Republican majority in the Senate.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Richard Hudson also weighed in, commending Whatley for his commitment to conservative values and leadership in North Carolina.

As for the race itself, it’s shaping up to be highly competitive. Republican Senator Tom Tillis is expected to retire, and former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is reportedly preparing to vie for the open Senate seat. Cooper seems to be clearing the Democratic field, having attracted attention after a rival candidate, former North Carolina Congressman Wiley Nickel, suspended his campaign.

Interestingly, there were discussions about Lara Trump potentially entering the race, but she recently clarified on social media that she would not be running.
