Mike Donilon Defends Biden Amid Congressional Scrutiny

WASHINGTON – Mike Donilon, a longstanding confidant of President Biden, criticized Congressional Democrats for what he views as an overreaction to Biden’s debate performance. This came during a six-hour closed-door session with the House Oversight Committee.

At 66, Donilon has been a senior adviser to Biden since the early 1980s, asserting that Biden’s communication abilities have improved throughout his presidency. “What I witnessed was a leader who is deeply engaged with serious issues, both at home and abroad,” he remarked in his initial statement, according to reports.

He also noted, “Every president ages while in office, and while President Biden has done so, he has also become a stronger and more astute leader, facing some of the toughest challenges of his tenure.” This perspective, however, hasn’t been universally accepted among Democrats. Some, like veteran strategist David Axelrod, suggested that Donilon may be too emotionally tied to Biden to see things clearly.

His commitment was evident during the interview, as he staunchly defended Biden’s qualifications for office. Donilon suggested that critics had exaggerated Biden’s poor debate performance. He reiterated his belief that Biden’s communication skills have indeed sharpened over his time in office.

Last month, the GOP-led House Oversight Committee called Donilon to testify, making him the eighth former Biden aide to appear before them. It’s worth noting that the committee members were largely absent during the questioning, as many were away on holiday breaks.

Chairman James Comer has been investigating claims of concealment regarding Biden’s mental acuity, which originally started in the last Congress and has now also focused on the use of autopen for signing official documents.

Interestingly, Donilon reportedly claimed he wasn’t aware of the autopen or its application. Described in the book “Original Sin” as part of Biden’s inner circle, he has been characterized as a significant decision-maker in the president’s team.

During the private questioning, Donilon maintained that Biden is ideally suited to lead the nation, although he did acknowledge some public skepticism regarding Biden’s command presence and tendency to stumble over words.

Having worked alongside Biden since 1981, Donilon’s involvement in Biden’s 2024 campaign could potentially net him $4 million, along with an additional $4 million if Biden wins re-election.

After his lengthy interview, Donilon avoided media questions, leaving reporters without further comments.

Other aides, including former Chief of Staff Ron Klain and various senior advisers, have also appeared before this investigation panel. Next week will see testimonies from more key figures like Bruce Reed and Anita Dunn.
