A teacher has admitted to fatally stabbing a couple, but claims he had no prior knowledge of them while they hiked with their two children in Arkansas State Park.
Charges have been filed against 28-year-old Andrew James McGan for two counts of capital murder regarding the deaths of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Kristen Amanda Brink, 41.
McGan is currently unconfined and is set to appear at the Washington County Detention Center shortly.
Colonel Mike Hagar from the Arkansas State Police is actively trying to figure out the motive behind the attacks, which took place at Devilsden, a sprawling state park located near West Fork, roughly 140 miles northwest of Little Rock.
Since the incident on Saturday, the park trail has been closed to the public.
McGan was apprehended on Wednesday in a barber shop in Springdale, around 30 miles north of the park, as stated by Major Gen. Stacey Rhodes, who oversees the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Washington County Prosecutor Brandon Carter mentioned uncertainty about whether McGan has legal representation or if he will need a public defender.
The Associated Press attempted to reach McGan but did not receive a response, as he has no prior criminal record.
According to officials, the husband was attacked first, and after the wife returned to assist with a child, she too was fatally stabbed.
At this point, it’s unclear if the couple’s daughters, aged 7 and 9, witnessed the violence. They were unharmed and are being looked after by family members.
McGan was cooperative during his arrest and confessed to the killings. Police were able to match his DNA to blood at the scene, making this case particularly troubling, according to authorities.
In 27 years on the force, Colonel Hagar mentioned that this incident stands out as one of the most brutal he’s encountered.
Police received numerous tips
McGan’s arrest followed an extensive five-day search and a flood of leads.
No one actually witnessed the attack, but investigators collected photos and videos from other hikers who were in the vicinity at the time. They also released composite sketches and obtained surveillance footage to narrow down the suspect’s vehicle.
Less than an hour after McGan was identified as a suspect, he was arrested at the barber shop.
Court proceedings ahead
Prosecutor Carter indicated that the state will give the judge the option to impose the death penalty.
Background on the suspect
McGan holds active teaching licenses in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma, though there’s no indication that any of these states intend to suspend or revoke them. The Associated Press has reached out to the educational institutions in those states for further comment.
He was on administrative leave from the Louisville Independent School District since spring 2023, as noted by a district spokesperson.
Sierra Malcolm, whose son was taught by McGan in fourth grade, described the teacher as somewhat cold and indifferent towards students. She even reported some of his behavior to the school principal.
In May 2023, McGan resigned from his position at the Louisville School District. He also worked in a small Oklahoma district from summer 2024 until May this year, resigning while in search of a job elsewhere, as confirmed by the Sand Springs Public Schools statement.
According to Lissa Chidester, a spokesperson for the district, law enforcement has not reached out about the investigation.
McGan had yet to begin his new role at Springdale Public Schools, as the investigation continues. District chief Jared Cleveland confirmed they couldn’t share further details at this time.
The victims’ recent move
The Brinks had recently relocated from South Dakota to a small town in Prairie Grove, Arkansas, with their three daughters.
Clinton was set to start as a milk delivery driver on Monday, per his employer Hilland Daly. Kristen had nursing licenses from Montana and South Dakota prior to their move to Arkansas.
The Brink family described the couple as “heroes who protect their little girls” following their tragic deaths.
