Harris confirms she won’t run for governor of California, describes the political system as 'broken'

Harris Steps Away from Governor Race, Citing a “Broken System”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Thursday that she will not be pursuing a run for office, citing her disillusionment with America’s “broken system.”

During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” she shared her thoughts on why she chose not to run for governor of California. “Recently, I decided—I just don’t want to go back into that system right now. I think it’s broken,” she explained to Colbert when discussing her decision not to pursue the governorship.

Harris, who previously served as California’s Attorney General and U.S. Senator, had been seen as a strong candidate to replace Governor Gavin Newsom when his term ends. Speculation about her potential run had been circulating since she lost the presidential race to Donald Trump in 2024. A source close to her had mentioned back in March that she was considering the possibility and would make a decision by summer.

Earlier, she posted an update on social media, saying, “At this point, my leadership and public service do not lie within an elected office. I’m looking forward to traveling the country, listening to the American people, and aiding in the election of Democrats who are courageously fighting for our values.”

Instead of focusing on the governor’s race, Harris expressed her desire to engage with the public. “I want to hear from people and have meaningful conversations,” she said, reaffirming her commitment to ongoing advocacy rather than stepping back from her role in political discourse.

Colbert pointed out that her comments could be interpreted as a retreat from the political arena, to which Harris responded that she would always be part of the fight. “That’s definitely not the case,” she asserted, adding that her involvement in political matters was far from over.

Even though Harris has opted out of the governorship, she remains a prominent figure with potential interest in the 2028 presidential race. If she does decide to run, she may face a crowded field, but her established network and name recognition set her apart as a serious candidate.

As the conversation unfolded, one Democratic strategist remarked, “If she jumps in, she’s certainly going to be a very serious contender in the primary.” With her background and connections, many are watching closely to see her next steps.
