Stephen Colbert avoids challenging issues in easygoing interview with Kamala Harris

Colbert’s Interview with Kamala Harris Lacks Substance

Stephen Colbert, the host of CBS’s “The Late Show,” recently sat down with former Vice President Kamala Harris. This was her first interview since leaving office, and, well, it seemed a bit more like a promotional opportunity for her upcoming book, “107 Days,” than a deep dive into pressing issues.

Surprisingly, Colbert steered clear of a significant topic: the ongoing concerns regarding President Joe Biden’s cognitive health. There’s been quite a bit of chatter among Biden aides, including his doctor, about this matter, especially following revelations in several tell-all books that shed light on his challenges while in office.

During the conversation, Colbert tossed a few softballs Harris’s way, especially about her past experiences and how she’s preparing for the 2024 campaign. But glaringly absent were questions about her political positioning relative to Biden, who, let’s face it, has seen better days in terms of public perception.

Interestingly enough, Harris has found herself amidst controversy related to Trump’s lawsuit against CBS News and its parent company, Paramount, which was sparked partly by her comments in a previous “60 Minutes” interview. Critics pointed out that her responses seemed tailored to serve her campaign narrative.

Colbert and Harris appeared to dance around the elephant in the room regarding the CBS drama tied to Trump’s legal challenges. Harris made a vague reference to “subordination” that has unfolded since Trump took office but didn’t mention Paramount directly.

As the interview progressed, it became evident that Harris frequently sidestepped tough questions, opting to focus instead on discussing her book. One particularly notable moment came when she was asked about her leadership role within the Democratic Party. Here, she expressed reluctance to name names, suggesting that too much pressure shouldn’t fall on any one individual.

In summary, the half-hour chat felt rather superficial, lacking the heart of the controversies that continue to swirl around Harris and the current administration. It might leave viewers wondering if they missed something, or if, perhaps, the interview was designed to avoid rocky waters altogether.
