Cambodia Nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
Cambodia has announced its intention to nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. This nomination comes after his involvement in facilitating a ceasefire agreement that aims to resolve the ongoing border dispute with Thailand.
During a press conference in Phnom Penh on Friday, San Changtor, Cambodia’s deputy prime minister, expressed gratitude to Trump for promoting peace in the region. He emphasized that the president is deserving of this prestigious nomination, which is awarded to individuals or organizations recognized for significant contributions to “international fellowship.”
“We acknowledge his great efforts for peace,” Changtor noted, reflecting on the positive impact of Trump’s role.
Ceasefire Contract Between Thailand and Cambodia
In a related development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had also nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last month, while Pakistani officials mentioned in June that they would endorse him for assisting in easing tensions with India.
Last week, Trump called for a ceasefire during discussions with Cambodian and Thai leaders, stating that the U.S. would step back from trade negotiations with Southeast Asian nations until hostilities cease. The ceasefire talks took place in Malaysia, bringing an end to the most intense conflict between Thailand and Cambodia in over a decade.
Trump remarked, “Many people were killed, and I was mediating between two nations with a long history of conflict.” His comments came during a recent trip to Scotland, where he reflected on the complexities of the situation.
Growing Violence and Ceasefire Efforts
After an escalation triggered by a landmine explosion that injured several Thai soldiers, fighting erupted, leading to a five-day clash between the two nations. The toll from the conflict has been severe, with at least 43 fatalities and over 300,000 people evacuated from the border areas.
Trump recounted his discussions, stating, “I said, ‘I don’t want to trade for someone killing each other.’ So we managed to settle it.” He described the honor of being involved in that resolution, considering the potential for extensive conflict.
Following the ceasefire announcement, a White House spokesperson highlighted Trump’s direct involvement as crucial to achieving peace in the region, saying, “President Trump has done this. Give him the Nobel Peace Prize!”
Additionally, Changtor expressed appreciation for Trump’s administration’s decision to reduce tariffs on Cambodian goods, which had originally been set to increase significantly and posed a threat to the country’s vital clothing and footwear industry.
