Progressive Democrats are disconnecting from reality with 'mermaid' culture

Mermaid Community in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., known for its significant political scene, now has something a bit more whimsical—an emerging mermaid community.

This unique populace in D.C., Maryland, and nearby areas is increasingly seen as a haven for liberals looking to “escape” the bustle of daily life and reconnect with their “inner children.”

Interestingly, some members of this mermaid society work for the federal government, which is—well, perhaps a little ironic.

“It feels really good to, you know, just escape into something magical and distance myself from this reality,” one member noted.

A recent Washington Post article highlights this community, noting that many individuals are fleeing the “high-pressure environment” of D.C.

“Living here is quick-paced. There’s traffic, and so many people. But even if it’s just for a few hours, it’s nice to find a magical escape from that,” another member mentioned.

One group, the Metromer Folk Group, features around 1,000 followers, a mix of “dancers, swimmers, government employees, military spouses, and parents.”

The group’s founder, Colleen McCartney, identifies as a Celtic siren. He points out the diverse nature of the group, welcoming everyone from women and men to non-binary individuals.

“There are many who seek a space where they feel accepted, be it due to nerves or their sexual orientation. They’re often looking for a way to connect with their inner child, which is pretty rare,” he explained.

D.C. even hosts an annual convention for mermaids, where participants don provocative costumes while swimming in large pools. This is just one of many events fueling the community’s growth.

Members boast of “having enough disposable income for tails that can cost thousands,” as mentioned in the Post.

Such extravagant costumes are displayed at annual gatherings like Group-pride DC’s Mermagic Con, which will feature a variety of colorful personalities including several noteworthy merfolk.

However, the community is also keen on maintaining a safe and respectful environment. Organizers have established strict codes of conduct to help prevent harassment, with consequences for violations.

Those attending are encouraged to respect others’ gender identities and are reminded to keep their hands and opinions to themselves.

While some locals view this community with amusement, others, like Capitol Hill reporter Rebeka Zeljko, express skepticism. She’s heard about such groups but believes they reflect a troubling societal trend.

“It seems like many folks want to morph standard adult experiences into something novel or fun. It makes me think of adults who neglect traditional values, perhaps searching for meaning,” she reflected.

When asked about participating in one of these cosplay groups to escape D.C.’s strains, Zeljko simply stated, “I just exercise like a regular person.”
