Republican Mayoral Candidate Proposes Sanctuary City Vote

Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa has announced that if he is elected, he plans to let voters decide if New York City should remain a sanctuary city.

“I believe these matters should be left to the people of New York,” Sliwa, who founded the Guardian Angels, told the Post regarding this contentious issue that allows undocumented immigrants to evade deportation.

Former Mayor de Blasio and his allies in the city council pushed for several policies related to this designation in 2014 and 2018.

Mayor Eric Adams recently contended that despite pressure from the Trump administration’s new lawsuits aimed at criminal immigration policies, he cannot simply reverse the law with an executive order due to potential complications with state politics.

Yet, Adams has not taken steps to guide two charter revision committees he appointed to consider referendums on whether to keep, abolish, or modify this policy.

“Eric Adams talks a lot, but he had two chances for New Yorkers to vote on the Sanctuary City law, and he passed both times. As mayor, I would gather the Charter Amendment Committee to address key issues like the Sanctuary City law and the future of Rikers Island,” Sliwa stated.

Currently, Sliwa is polling third or fourth in the race, trailing behind democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani and former governor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani is a Democratic candidate, while both Adams and Cuomo are running as independents.

The Adams campaign has not responded to requests for comment.
