Manhunt Underway Following Fatal Shooting in Montana
A manhunt is underway after a U.S. military veteran entered a bar in Montana and shot four individuals dead.
The Montana Criminal Investigation Bureau reported that the shooting took place at the Owl Bar in Anaconda around 10:30 PM local time. Authorities are actively searching for the perpetrator, who fled in a white Ford F-150 pickup truck that has since been recovered. However, the gunman remains at large.
The suspect has been identified as Michael Paul Brown, who is considered “armed and dangerous” by the local law enforcement. It’s noted that Brown resided next to the bar where the incident occurred.
Currently, law enforcement is concentrating its search efforts in the mountainous area west of Anaconda. They are advising local residents to remain indoors and lock their doors for safety.
David Gwalder, the owner of the Owl Bar, expressed disbelief regarding the incident, stating there appeared to be no previous conflict between the suspect and the victims.
“He knew everyone at the bar,” Gwaldar mentioned. “I assure you that. He had not had a dispute with any of them. I think he just snapped.”
A spokesperson for the U.S. Army confirmed that Brown is a military veteran, having served from 2001 to 2005 with deployment to Iraq during that time.
“If you see him, do not approach,” urged the Anaconda Dare Lodge County Law Enforcement. “Please contact 911 if you can provide any information on Michael Paul Brown.”
While police have identified the victims, their names have yet to be released pending family notifications.
The Granite County Sheriff’s Office shared that the last known description of the suspect included a tied-up shirt, blue jeans, and an orange bandana. Additionally, the suspect’s residence in Anaconda has been cleared by SWAT teams.
Governor Greg Gianforte of Montana voiced his support on social media, offering prayers for the victims, their families, and the responding law enforcement officers.
“Pray for Susan and me for the victims, their loved ones, and for the brave law enforcement officers who respond to this tragedy,” he stated, referencing his wife, Susan Gianforte.
Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino noted that the FBI is providing investigative assistance in the ongoing situation.
