A US military veteran is suspected of shooting four people at a bar in Montana, leading to a massive manhunt. The individual, identified as Michael Paul Brown, reportedly fled the scene wearing only black underwear, leaving behind a chaotic situation, according to local authorities.
This incident occurred in Anaconda, a small town roughly 25 miles northwest of Butte, around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Surveillance images released by the Montana Department of Justice show Brown escaping from the bar under dire circumstances.
The owner of the bar, David Gwalder, believes Brown knew the victims—three patrons and the bartender—indicating a possible connection. “He knew everyone at that bar. I’m sure of that,” Gwalder remarked. “He wasn’t feuding with anyone there. I think he just lost it.”
Authorities have not disclosed the names of the victims at this time. Following the shooting, Brown drove away in a white pickup truck, which he later abandoned, as reported by a state investigative manager. “We haven’t received any reports of him harming anyone else, but he is armed and considered very dangerous,” he stated.
In the wake of the attack, the town, with a population of less than 10,000, sheltered in place as law enforcement scoured the area for any signs of Brown. As the search extended into a second day, various agencies coordinated efforts to locate the suspect.
Anaconda Deer Lodge County Police Chief expressed gratitude to residents for their resilience during what he termed “an extremely stressful and tragic time,” sharing condolences for the victims’ families. “We are doing everything possible for justice,” he added, urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Brown served as an armor crewman in the Army from January 2001 to May 2005, having seen deployment in Iraq for a year. He later joined the National Guard before leaving service as a sergeant. It’s been mentioned that he struggled with mental health challenges in the years leading up to this event, with family members expressing their concerns for his wellbeing.
In a heartfelt message, Brown’s niece described her uncle’s condition, stressing that it wasn’t merely an instance of substance abuse but a deeper issue of mental health struggles. “There are signs when someone is in distress, and it often feels like the system fails them when they seek help,” she said, lamenting the struggles veterans face in accessing mental health care.
New developments continue to unfold in this tragic and alarming situation.
