Child’s Encounter with Octopus Leads to Unexpected Bruise
A six-year-old boy ended up with marks on his arms after an interaction with an octopus at the San Antonio Aquarium, as shared by his mother, Britney Tallinn. The video footage she posted highlights a series of dotted marks that extend from his arms to up near his armpits.
In her video, Tallinn noted that her son had previously touched the octopus, which often approached him. Typically, these encounters ended with the octopus releasing its grip. However, this time was different.
She described how it “came out of the tank” as she was attempting to pull her son away. In her description, she mentioned that the octopus had seemed fond of her son until he tried to pull it back into the tank. It took three employees to get the octopus off him. Initially, they thought it was a sweet connection between the boy and the animal, but then the marks were surprising.
In a related post, the San Antonio Aquarium shared a video on TikTok, demonstrating how octopuses can leave behind what some called an “octopus kiss” with their suction cups.
According to a statement from the aquarium, interactions with the octopus are supposed to be supervised, and signs are posted to remind visitors of the rules. They explained that the octopus was exhibiting normal curious behaviors rather than any aggressive actions. Staff responded quickly to ensure the child was safe after the encounter.
They emphasized that their giant Pacific octopuses are healthy, well-adjusted creatures that typically engage positively with guests. However, they also pointed out that there are risks involved in such encounters and that strict safety protocols are in place to protect everyone involved.
