Yankees’ Struggles Continue After Loss to Marlins
In Miami, the Yankees faced a tough loss on Friday night, one that could linger in their minds for a while.
With a wry grin, manager Aaron Boone remarked, “Melatonin will help,” following their 2-0 defeat against the Marlins on Saturday.
The Marlins had a challenging game too, suffering a shocking 13-12 loss. They went from a 6-0 lead in the fifth inning to trailing by the ninth, where their previously commanding 12-10 advantage vanished.
New pitchers for the Yankees—Jake Bird, David Bedner, and Kamilo Doval—struggled, allowing nine runs in just over two innings, although utility player Jose Caballero’s costly error in the ninth added to the team’s woes.
However, despite this frustrating game, Boone expressed confidence in the team’s overall direction and their moves prior to the trade deadline.
“It’s one of those moments where you wake up and think, ‘Wow, that really happened,’” Boone shared. “But it’s nice knowing how we bolstered our bullpen. Clearly, Friday didn’t go as planned, but there’s still a lot of belief in what we can achieve moving forward.”
In another highlight, rookie Cam Schlittler made his big league starting debut. Following the release of Marcus Stroman, Schlittler stepped up significantly and displayed solid pitching over five innings, despite facing some tough hitters.
He reflected on his performance, saying, “I think it was clearly much better than last week. I’m working on getting my off-speed pitches in the zone.” Yet, two home runs from former Yankees prospect Agustin Ramirez turned out to be the critical difference.
Meanwhile, Mark Leiter Jr. pitched successfully in a minor league rehabilitation game, possibly making a return to the Yankees roster soon.
Boone noted, “I’ll be watching today and will reach out in the next few days. If you want another game or plan to take him to Texas, you’ll know.”
Ryan McMahon’s recent acquisition has also bolstered the team’s defense at third base, a position that had seen challenges in recent years. Boone praised his poise, suggesting that McMahon appears to be settling in nicely.
As for Aaron Judge, he took some practice swings in Tampa and if all goes well, he could be back from the injured list soon.
Meanwhile, Fernando Cruz has begun light bullpen sessions following an oblique strain, with hopes of returning to the bullpen by late August. “He feels really good,” Boone mentioned.
