Rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski made an unexpected appearance on the National League All-Star team after only five major league starts, but he was placed on the injured list by the Brewers on Sunday.
He retroactively went to the IL for 15 days starting Thursday due to a left tibia issue.
At 23 years old, Misiorowski was set to take the mound against the Nationals on Sunday, but Triple A call-up Logan Henderson filled in for him.
“Our pitching staff noticed something was off during the week. They realized this in the bullpen and decided we needed to take a cautious approach,” said Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy on Sunday. “We want to ensure we’re taking good care of our players.”
“He has a bright future ahead, but being young, he tries to push through things. We want to be sure he only makes decisions when he feels completely ready.”
Misiorowski had an impressive start to his career, going 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA in his initial outings, even facing some controversy over his All-Star selection.
During the All-Star game, he contributed scoreless innings in a contest that ended in a 6-6 tie, before a home run contest ultimately decided the winner.
Since the break, he’s managed to lower his ERA to 2.70 over two starts, but he took a line drive to his left shin from Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki last Thursday, which seems to have aggravated his condition.
The news of Misiorowski’s shutdown came just two days after the Brewers placed outfielder Jackson Chowlio on the injured list due to a strained right hamstring.
“I mean, I’m competitive,” Misiorowski shared. “I want to play every game, so this… it’s tough. Sitting out isn’t enjoyable, but I wouldn’t want to play if I wasn’t at my best. We’re all trying to win, and if being on the bench is what’s needed, then that’s what I have to do.”
“It was basically like, ‘This is the situation.’ I did try to push back a bit, but I understand they’re looking out for me.”
