Struggles for Disney’s Latest Superhero Film
Disney’s new superhero flick, Fantastic Four: The First Step, initially had a strong opening last week. However, it’s faced a significant drop in box office performance that suggests troubling times ahead.
The film experienced a staggering 66% decline in revenue during its second weekend, plummeting from $117.6 million to just $40 million. This steep drop is a concern for the film’s future prospects.
Internationally, the film had a decent debut, raking in over $108 million. But by its second weekend, earnings dwindled to about $39.6 million. This trend might indicate that the movie could struggle to surpass the $500 million mark globally.
Despite a positive reception from both critics and audiences during its first weekend, the financial figures tell a different story. This may signal broader issues for superhero movies, as they seem to yield diminishing returns for studios.
Other recent superhero releases from Marvel, like Thunderbolt, have also disappointed Disney. Reports suggest that Thunderbolt incurred a loss of over $100 million, as it only grossed about $350 million against a budget of $400 million, including production and marketing costs.
This marks the third Marvel film in a row that has underperformed, joining Captain America: A Brave New World and Amazing in the disappointment category.
Even DC movies, under Warner’s banner, have faced their own hurdles at the box office. While James Gunn’s latest Superman reboot has garnered favorable reviews, its earnings are also below expectations. After two weeks in theaters, it has grossed around $406 million, which is not sufficient to recover its production costs.
Disney’s setbacks are not limited to superhero films. Alongside Fantastic Four, both Snow White and Pixar’s Erio have also failed to make an impact.
