Derek Dooley, a former football coach, reveals plans to run for the Georgia Senate in 2026.

There’s a new Republican candidate who has entered a significant Senate race for the 2026 midterm elections. Former football coach Derek Dooley has positioned himself as an outsider, specifically challenging Georgia Senator John Ossoff after receiving support from Donald Trump upon announcing his candidacy.

In his campaign launch video and statement, Dooley expressed, “I’m running because our state needs new leadership in Washington, DC. Professional politicians like John Ossoff are the problem.” He criticized Ossoff for being focused on his political ambitions and aligning with far-left policies, which he believes do not represent Georgia’s values.

Dooley further committed that, if elected, he would align with Trump’s agenda and work collaboratively with the former president to benefit the country.

This Senate race is crucial for Republicans looking to strengthen their 53-47 majority, especially since Ossoff is seeking re-election in a state that Trump notably won during last year’s presidential election.

It’s worth mentioning that Dooley comes from a well-known sports background, being the son of the late Vince Dooley, a prominent college football figure. Although this is Dooley’s first foray into public office, Republican insiders suggest that he has the backing of Georgia’s two-term Governor, Brian Kemp.

With Dooley now in the mix, he becomes the third major Republican contender in this Senate race. Mike Collins, a representative and trucking businessman, launched his candidacy recently, while Buddy Carter, who has served Georgia’s coastal districts for a decade, announced his Senate run earlier this spring, also seeking Trump’s endorsement.

In a nod to his rivals, Dooley mentioned, “I am not part of a political organization and I am not spending my life climbing the political ladder in DC.” He emphasized his commitment to prioritizing Georgia and bringing common sense to Washington, touching on themes like sports participation that resonate with his views on current debates.

While many national Republicans courted him for the Senate, Dooley decided to challenge Ossoff directly, bolstered by Kemp’s recent announcement of support for him.

Regarding Trump’s influence in Georgia, it’s been reported that there was some coordination between Trump’s team and Kemp’s advisors, aimed at unifying a candidate to challenge Ossoff. Despite this, it appears there was some frustration within Trump’s camp due to the timing of Kemp’s decisions in the Senate race.

As the situation unfolds, it’s clear that the dynamics in Georgia’s Senate race are quite complicated, with personal ties and political ambitions at play. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all develops as the elections approach.
